The review found that, psychologically, optimism, purpose in life, and emotional stability may serve as psychosocial resources that buffer against vulnerability to chronic stress and support healthier aging and resilience.

Finally, the genetic heritability of lifespan is modest (20% to 30% overall, with recent modeling estimating the heritability of intrinsic lifespan at about 50% after accounting for extrinsic mortality and confounding factors). Centenarians frequently carry disease-risk alleles, suggesting that compensatory or buffering mechanisms may contribute to their resilience, and display DNA-methylation profiles consistent with slower biological aging than expected for their chronological age, although such signatures may also reflect survival selection and lifelong environmental exposures.

Conclusion

This review addresses the discourse surrounding longevity-behavior associations by clarifying that extreme longevity cannot be reduced to short-term interventions or universal behavioral recipes. Its findings highlight that future health initiatives should leverage insights from long-lived populations to promote population-wide healthy aging trajectories while accounting for the probabilistic reality of exceptional human longevity.

The authors also caution that most evidence on exceptional longevity remains observational and vulnerable to selection and survivorship bias, while prospective life-course studies capable of establishing causal pathways to centenarian survival remain scarce.
